Acoustic Neuroma

Post by SteveL » Wed Sep 13, 2006 12:06 pm

I want to tell you all that I am acoustic neuroma survivor.
In November of 2004 I was diagnosed with a 3.2 cm tumor.
After 13 hours of surgery and 2 months recovery, I was told that I needed to see a doctor Sunil J. Patel at MUSC in Charleston, SC.
He operated on me in Februrary and and had no problem removing the tumor. I was shopping 3 days after surgery.

My thankx go to MUSC and Dr. Patel

Hi Steve,

Hi , i am 32yrs old female living in Australia.
I was just recently diagnosed with Large AN = 3.4cm
AN didnt really affect my life and so to find that It is large was quite shocking.. my specialist think because i am a fit person.. ( I think it is more God's grace that I was spared to know this illness before it's too late)..
I have met with the best Neuro-Otology in Australia.. and he said he will try to save my facial nerve during operation... but he wont be able to save my hearing.. :(
I am due to meet a Neurosurgeon for second opinion this coming tuesday and meeting back my Neuro-Otology on Wednesday to let him know about my surgery decision..
I am very interested to know how you are surviving now...
Have you permanently lost your hearing ? some survivor are said to be still losing balance and having headache... Do you have the same issue ?

ch3rishu,

How have the meetings with your doctor and surgeons gone? Are they still going to proceed as before and is there any improved chance they may be able to save your hearing? Also Steve did you have two surgeries or just one? From your post it looks like you had two surgeries. Did you have a health savings account insurance plan or a traditional plan?

Hello Heather,

I have done my Accoustic Neuroma Surgery few weeks ago. It was done through Translabyrinth method..by my Neuro-Otology. I have checked with all surgeons, including contacting best surgeons of AN who was known to be able to preserve hearing.. unfortunately, with my size of tumour they all said unable to preserve it.

I lost my hearing.. but my affected ear still ringing up to todays.. I hope this will go away...

I didnt lose my balance much , I was told that my brain had adjusted with balancing problem for a while, so after surgery it didnt take long for me to be up and about as normal.

I was nauseous for week and my headaches lasted for a bout two weeks.

My surgeon said it was sucessfull surgery, he removed 100% of the tumour and preserved my facial nerves.

I had bell palsy for the past 10 days or so.. as my facial nerves was inflamed after the surgery.... but now I can see that it's slowly going back to normal... :P
