Hi everyone,
I'm new to the site, but really need to hear and talk to other people who care for family members or friends with advanced cancer.
My husband is 42 yrs old and is currently in a palleative care unit. Not sure if he will be able to come back home at this stage. He can't use his right hand, has a lot of difficulty in walking (and often even standing), and is experiencing a lot of vision difficulties. He is on high doses of Dexamethesone and has pretty much run out of options. One belssing is that he is not in pain.
His story is unusual in that he has been fighting brain cancer now for 18 years. We met about a year after he was first diagnosed aged 24 (Astrocytoma, Grade 2, which later changed to an oligodendroglioma Grade 3). Since then, we married, bought a house, travelled overseas, he started a business, and we had a family (2 boys, aged 7 and 4). He's had stacks of treatment - four lots of chemo and two lots of radiotherapy, plus 5 operations. I hope this is of some comfort to anyone out there who is just now starting to deal with this horrible disease - as bleak as things look after first diagnosis and possibly subsequent recurrances, long term survival IS possible. We've had many times of fun and good life in between the hospital stays, and even at times of his steadily increasing disability.
Still, here we are now, pretty much at the end of the road and both he and I are so... TIRED. I feel very old and alone sometimes, despite being only 34 and having lots of people's best wishes behind both of us. I'd love to hear from others in a similar position.
